Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society’s Newest Member…Me

One of my goals this year was to become a member of a national and local chapter of a genealogy society.  At the beginning of this journey, I was content with it just being me going to libraries and archives alone with just a notebook and my laptop.  I was happy researching online at home alone at my kitchen table.  I honestly thought it would always be that way….me being alone researching.  But over the past two years or so, I have started to talk more openly about my journey and slowly started letting people in my very small and tight circle.  So much so that my circle has gotten a little bigger and wider.  I am learning to ask for help more and to accept it when it is offered.

This journey is teaching me that I really need to network more.  I need to find other like-minded genealogists and family historians to assist me with my research efforts.  People that I can bounce ideas off of and learn different research techniques from.  So I decided that I would join the Afro-American History and Genealogical SocietyAAHGS was founded in 1977 because the founding members felt there was a need for an organization that would focus largely on the family history of minorities.  AAHGS has local chapters all over the country and is open to anyone for membership.  Members include professional genealogists as well as the non-professional family historians.

The only chapter in Arkansas is in Little Rock.  So I have contacted them to find out about when the meetings are, and so I can pay my local dues as well.  AAHGS  has a national conference every year in October.  This will be a great place for me to start networking and actually talk to people about my research goals and my genealogy future.  I’m excited about being a part of this organization and continuing to learn about genealogy.  And this is why my journey continues…

Trish, we don’t have a chapter in Syracuse, NY so I am a national member of AAHGS and I love it. Even though I live in NY, I want to join the Arkansas chapter, where my family hails from. I haven’t heard back from them yet. Did you have any luck?

I emailed the Arkansas chapter last Wednesday. I haven’t heard anything. I’m going to wait until the end of this week and email again. I’m excited to be a part of this society. I think this will really elevate my research and networking.

I emailed them again last week and still haven’t heard back. I’m going to see if I can find them on Facebook.
