October is Family History Month, and I can’t think of a better time to spend a little time with your family history. Maybe you’ve been researching your family for years but haven’t had much time to work on it lately. October is a great opportunity to get back to your research and see where your family history journey takes you next.
Maybe you’ve never researched your family history before. That’s okay, too! You don’t have to know where every branch of your family tree leads. Start with what you know and take it one person, one record, or one story at a time. And don’t forget that family history isn’t just about research. It’s also about sharing the stories you already know.
Do you know how your grandparents met? Do you remember stories your parents or grandparents told you when you were growing up? Maybe you have old family photographs but don’t know who everyone is. Write down what you know. Label those photographs. Call a family member and ask a few questions.
You never know which little story today might become an important piece of your family’s history tomorrow. So, whether you’re returning to a research project you’ve put aside, starting your family tree for the first time, or simply sharing a family story, October is a great month to celebrate your family’s history.
You don’t have to know everything to get started. Just start with what you know.
Happy Family History Month!
Thank you for sharing your experience, knowledge and insight. Love you.
