I tell people all the time, if you are going to RootsTech, make time to go to the Family Search Library. The Family Search Library is the largest genealogical library in America. It has record collections, microfilm, books, maps, and so much more for cities and countries from all over the world. No matter what area of the United States or the world you are researching, I’m sure they have something from that area.
We arrived just before 9am because we had an appointment at the Memory Lane. This is our third year using the Memory Lane. We have been able to digitize photos, VHS tapes, and slides. Both Phillip and I had an appointment. Phillip used the Fast Photo Scanner and I scanned some slides. We had a light load this year, so we were able to get everything scanned in just over an hour.

Once we were done with the Memory Lane, we headed upstairs to the third floor. I had a list of books that I wanted to go through. It seems like everyone had the same idea of coming to the Family Search Library before RootsTech starts tomorrow. Almost every computer station was taken. But I was able to snag a computer station with a book scanner. I was able to find the books on my list plus some. Sitting at a book scanner station was very helpful. I was able to scan the pages that I needed and save them to my USB drive. Just a little tip, if you know you are going to scan pages from a book, always scan the front and back covers as well as the table of contents for future reference.

I love going to the library to research. I love being around the books. But there’s something about the Family History Library that is extra special. I don’t know if it’s because I’m always able to find something new or if it’s because there are so many people there that can help, or if it’s because I can get so much done in such a short amount of time. I’m thinking it’s a combination of all those plus some. I would have to say that my morning/afternoon here at the Family Search Library was a success. It’s been just over five hours, and I’m headed out to grab something to eat because I’m starving. Tomorrow is the first official day of RootsTech 2025. I am so happy that I was able to get some digitizing and a little research checked off of my to do list for what is going to be a very busy week.
