RootsTech 2024 – Day 3

Although day three is the shortest day of the conference, it always seems like it’s the busiest too. I got to the Salt Palace early because I wanted to make sure I got a good seat up close for my first session. I’m so glad that I did because it was a full session. I hung out and took some pictures with my new genealogy cousins with the speakers then hurried to the expo hall. Phillip and I got the chance to meet Jen and JD from season 6 of Relative Race. If you have been following my blog for any amount of time, then you know how much I love that show. And season 6 was one of my favorite seasons. It was hard to pick my favorite team that season because all of them were great to watch and get to know. To say I was excited to meet the would be an understatement. They are just as nice in person as I thought they would be from watching them on TV.

Saturday is also Family Discovery Day which is open to the public. So that always makes for a crowded time at the Salt Palace. Today’s keynote speaker was Emmy and Tony Award winning actress, Kristin Chenoweth. I had the honor to be invited to the RootsTech 2024 African American genealogy influencer meetup which was after the keynote at the Family Search Library hosted by Thom Reed of Family Search. I was so excited to be able to see, meet, talk with, and network with so many African American family historians/genealogists that I follow on social media. It was truly an honor to be in the same room with them. After my last session, I headed over to the Family Search Library for the rest of the evening researching.

I have been attending RootsTech since 2019, and every year gets better than previous year. RootsTech is the leader in the genealogy world for a reason. RootsTech offers sessions on the latest technology, databases, and any and all research techniques. When I say I had the best time connecting with other family historians, learning new research techniques, utilizing the Family Search Library, and networking, I mean that.

I can’t wait to see what is in store for us next year. Next year’s conference will be held in person in Salt Lake City, UT at the Salt Palace on March 6-8, 2025, and it will virtual as well.

Sessions I attended:

  • African American Genealogy: Ancestral Connections to a Revolutionary Black Church presented by Janice Gilyard and Orince Jenkins
  • Keynote Speaker – Kristen Chenoweth
  • Perfect 10 – diving into Library Guides for African American Research presented by Cecelia McFadden

  1. I remember you mentioned the Relative Race to me in a comment. I’m glad you talked about it again because this time I went right to get the app and sign up! I’m looking forward to watching it!
