12 Days of My Family History Discoveries – Day 10

I’ve always felt deeply connected to my family through cherished photos and memories. My official research journey didn’t begin until 2011. In these past 14 years, I have made some wonderful discoveries that I will be sharing to celebrate the holiday season.

In July/August 2022, I had the distinct honor of being featured in Family Tree Magazine. The article highlighted a project that was especially close to my heart—a display I created for my hometown’s Historical Society using items I discovered while cleaning out my grandmother’s home.

As I sorted through her belongings, I found photographs, programs, and keepsakes connected to our community’s all-Black high school—the same school both of my parents attended during segregation. Those items became the foundation of a Black History Month display that honored the students, teachers, and families who helped shape the school’s legacy.

Seeing that work recognized in Family Tree Magazine was more than a personal achievement. It was a reminder of the importance of preserving and sharing the histories tucked inside our own family homes.
