I’ve always felt deeply connected to my family through cherished photos and memories. My official research journey didn’t begin until 2011. In these past 14 years, I have made some wonderful discoveries that I will be sharing to celebrate the holiday season
Although I spend a lot of time researching in libraries and archives, one of my most memorable family history discoveries came during my very first research road trip, when I traveled to Chicago, with my mom and son, to interview my oldest relative, my Aunt Bert. I was hoping this trip and this time with Aunt would help me fill in some family history gaps, gather stories, and learn more about my maternal side of the family.

It was during this conversation that Aunt Bert told me that my grandmother attended a private high school in Woodruff County, Arkansas. I had no idea that there was even a private high school in Woodruff County for African Americans much less that my grandmother was a student there.
It still amazes me that I had to go all the way to Chicago to learn a story rooted in Arkansas about my grandmother. That trip taught me that sometimes the answers we seek are connected through people and not always documents/records.
