2025 AAHGS National Conference – Day 3

Today was the first day I didn’t feel like I was rushing around this morning. Phillip and I actually had breakfast together. We were sitting with the first person we ever met at AAHGS in 2018 and a former national president. When I say Toni is family to us, she really is. She took us in, took care of us, and has always been there for whatever we needed inside and outside of genealogy. It was so good to see her and spend some calm time with her this morning to just chat and catch up. I’m so glad that I have been intentional about soaking up as much as I could during this conference, the sessions, the people, and the atmosphere has been the best.

The last day of the conference is also the shortest day. With that said, I feel like I attended more sessions today than any other day. The National Awards and the International Book Awards Luncheon was today also. I love the book awards because I always get some new books to add to my reading list, and this year was no different.

I was also playing catch up when it comes to picture taking since I intentionally didn’t take as many pictures yesterday. I must say that I more than made up for it today. I was running around in between sessions getting selfies and photos that the Farewell session snuck up on me at 530pm. That is when it really hit me that this wonderful weekend had come to an end. Everyone was still all smiles, but for different reasons than when we arrived. We were all smiling because of the wonderful time we had together and the memories that were made. We were also excited to know that we would be seeing each other again soon.

Sessions I attended:

  • Unlocking Genealogy Through Freedmen’s Bureau Records using Full-Text Search, presented by Tammy Ozier
  • Resilient Roots: The Challenges and Triumphs of African American Genealogists, presented by Vernita Morgan
  • Digging Deeper within Newspapers, presented by Nicka Sewell-Smith
  • Awards Luncheon
  • Historical Resources that Help Fill in the Gaps Early African American Family History, presented by Cynthia Evans
