52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2025 – Week 27: Family Business

NOTE: I accepted the 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks challenge headed by fellow genealogy blogger Amy Johnson Crow. The idea behind this challenge is that you will receive email prompts, a word or phrase, every week, and you find something about your research or family history to write about.  Click HERE to read my first 52 Ancestors blog post in 2019.

In my family, education has always been the cornerstone. For the last four generations, we’ve not only graduated from college—we’ve done so with purpose, pride, and a deep sense of responsibility to uplift our communities.

The first two generations of college graduates in my family became educators. Teaching wasn’t just a job—it was a calling. They taught in classrooms for 30 to 50 years, shaping young minds and creating opportunities where few existed. These generations laid the foundation, showing us what it meant to lead with heart and serve with humility.

My generation followed in their footsteps, earning our degrees too—but we charted a different path. Many of us spent the last 20 years in corporate America, breaking barriers, climbing ladders, and gaining experience in industries our grandparents could have only dreamed of, but recently something remarkable is happening.

We’re taking everything we’ve learned—from the legacy of education to the strategies of the corporate world—and we’re building something of our own. We’re becoming business owners. We’re stepping into entrepreneurship not just for personal success, but to create generational wealth, flexibility, and freedom.

My husband and I recently opened a golf simulator business, Hit ‘Em Straight Indoor Golf, and my brother is in the beginning stages of opening a food truck, Birds and Batter. Our family legacy is growing and evolving. It will always include education, but now we are doing business on our terms.
