52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2025 – Week 6: Surprise

NOTE: I accepted the 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks challenge headed by fellow genealogy blogger Amy Johnson Crow. The idea behind this challenge is that you will receive email prompts, a word or phrase, every week, and you find something about your research or family history to write about.  Click HERE to read my first 52 Ancestors blog post in 2019.

Family history research can lead to all kinds of discoveries that we never anticipated. Anyone that is researching their family history is going to find a surprise or two. As I have researched, I have been reminded of family stories told to me during my youth, discovered family that I hadn’t met before, and learned about my genetic ethnicity. But honestly none of that information was a surprise to me.

When I think of surprises when it comes to genealogy, I always think of one of my favorite genealogy TV shows, Relative Race. Every episode the guests never know what to expect and are always more than pleasantly surprised when they discover new family.

Relative Race is a 10-day competition type genealogy show with four teams of two people traveling by car across America finding relatives that they have never met after they have completed a genetic DNA test. So, you can understand how the teams are always surprised when they walk up to a stranger’s doorstep and ask how are we related? Their response could be I’m your cousin, sibling, or even a parent. They really never know until they are told at that moment. It’s a TV show like no other, and if you haven’t seen it. You really are missing out. Seasons 2-14 are available on BYUTV.

  1. Thank you for the referral to Relative Race! I’ve watched 4, maybe 5 seasons to date. Last I watched was with the 2 young men who didn’t have drivers’ licenses! I was so happy for them at the end of the show.
