The Afro American Historical and Genealogical Society held its 44th National Conference October 18 – 21, 2023. This year’s conference was virtual. The theme of this year’s conference was ‘Hiding in Plain Sight: Uncovering the erased stories of our ancestors in the United States and Caribbean’. The conference highlights methods of genealogy research and explores the history of ancestors from the United States and Caribbean. Along with all the sessions, speakers, and expo hall, the conference also gives out international book awards and individual and chapter awards, among those awards is the President’s Award.

The AAHGS President’s Award is presented to a member who has rendered outstanding service to AAHGS for a minimum of five years at a personal sacrifice of time. This nominee has also contributed immeasurably to the growth and well-being of AAHGS. Such service may be for a single continuing activity, or for a variety of activities. The President alone is the sole selector of the recipient of this award.
Phillip has been a member of AAHGS since 2018. Although he didn’t have any interest in researching his own family at the time, he volunteered his technology skills and knowledge to the organization. Phillip has worked on the national PR committee, he has assisted the organization with transitioning their conferences to a virtual platform, and he works on the society’s video content. It was while recording many videos for AAHGS and hearing stories from other members that Phillip decided to start his own family history research in 2020. He is the host of Black Genealogy Corner Podcast, where he shares his story of research and talks with other family historians about their family stories and discoveries. He is also the co-host of our podcast, Journey Through the Generations. I am so proud of Phillip, the work he continues to do, and his commitment to the organization. Help me congratulate him on this much deserved award.
